Steps to Landing an Internship


1. Assess your Values, Interests, Personality, and Skills (VIPS) through career assessments at the Career Center.

2. Get involved on campus. Join a campus organization that relates to your interest areas. Gain valuable leadership skills.

3. Develop a list of your most job-transferable skills and assets that you could bring to the workplace.

4. Determine what type of an internship you want based off your skills and interests. Research and develop a list of your top ten companies.

5. Meet with the Coordinator of Career Preparation and Internships to develop an internship search strategy.

6. Have your resume and cover letter critiqued and begin practicing your interview skills. Be sure to have the proper business attire for interviewing. Visit the Career Center and the Office of Undergraduate Career Preparation for assistance.

7. Networking is one of the best strategies for locating an internship. Reach out to Family, Friends, and Faculty/Alumni. Meet with them to discuss your plans and seek advice.

8. Conduct informational interviews with three professionals in your areas of interests.

9. Attend career fairs and professional career panels for additional networking opportunities.

10. Search the College Central Network, EmployUM, and other websites for internship opportunities.

11. Be proactive. Begin applying for internships at least 6 months before you plan to intern.

12. Apply, apply, apply! You may have to apply to 10-50 internships before you land one.
